Located 20 miles souths SR 214 and covers 5,809 acres of rolling, largely treeless sandhills interspersed with lakes. From October to March this refuge has one of the country's largest concentrations of sandhill cranes. A favorite roosting area of these birds is Paul's Lake, which has water even during droughts. During a wet year when the other lakes are full, thousands of waterfowl descend on the refuge, joining the cranes and resident prairie dogs. Picnicking and camping are aloud.
