This recreation area is located on the border between Wyoming and Utah. Famous for the red rock that surrounds it, and the trophy trout fishing it provides, the lake stretches for 90 miles. Lying below the 500-foot-high Flaming Gorge Dam is the Green River, a favorite rafting destination. This recreation area features numerous campgrounds and hiking areas.
Red Canyon Visitor Center and Overlook, off Hwy 44, provides a spectacular view from 1,400 feet above Red Canyon and Flaming Gorge Reservoir; the visitor center is open daily Memorial Day-Labor Day. The recreation area also takes in the Firehole Canyon and Sheep Creek Geological Loop. Another visitor center is located at Flaming Gorge Dam, open daily all year, with extended hours Memorial Day - Labor Day. Fishing within the recreation area is year-round, hunting is seasonal; most facilities close in winter.
