Grant's cabin is located on the grounds and served as the headquarters from which Grant directed the Union war effort until March 29, 1865. When Dr. Eppes returned after the war, he borrowed money to buy and dismantle the Union warehouses and other structures on his property. The restored house has original furnishings in two rooms. Appomattox Manor has survived the "wars and tramplings" of two conquests: the British in the Revolution, and the Federals in the War Between the States. Quaint and rambling, with its gables and dormer windows and many porches, it is perhaps the oldest colonial home in America that shelters, after three hundred years, the descendants of the original owners of the estate.
