Appomattox is located in Appomattox County, of which it is the county seat, 25 miles east of Lynchburg between Evergreen Prospect and Spout Spring along Highway 727 off Highway 460 near Buckingham-Appomattox State Forest in the Central Region of the state. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 1,772, an increase of 65 since 1990.
One tradition says the community was named after an Indian queen, known as Apumetec; another says it was named for a tribe.
Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant here on April 9, 1865, ending the Civil War.
