Built in the 18th century, the manor house and 27 acres overlooking the Rappahannock River are preserved as a memorial to its former owner, Gari Melchers, the American artist who died in 1932. The house is furnished with antiques and art collected by Melchers and his wife. His studio exhibits more than 75 of his paintings. A visitor center, located in the former carriage house, offers an orientation videotape. Guided tours Monday-Saturday 10am-5pm, Sunday 1-5pm, March-November; Monday-Saturday 10am-4pm, Sunday 1-4pm, the rest of the year. Closed major holidays.
