Located next to Montpelier Cultural Arts Center, Montpelier was home to three generations of the Madison family. James Madison, Father of the United States Constitution and fourth President of the United States, lived at Montpelier until his death in 1836.
The Georgian-style mansion is situated on 2700 acres of rolling pasturelands, with formal gardens and forested areas in sight of the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains. Purchased and expanded by the duPont family in 1900, the site is famed for thoroughbred horses and the annual Montpelier Hunt Races.
See Montpelier decorated as it would have looked in 1830, furnished with original period pieces belonging to the family that built the house. Guided shuttle tours of the mansion include an orientation video, the Discovering Madison exhibit in the main house, a visit to the formal garden, and an 11-stop historic landscape walking tour.
