Bolton (pop. 971) is located in Chittenden County in the northwestern part of the state on Highway 2. It was chartered on June 7, 1763. An 1886 history of the county by W.S. Rann reports that the Bolton area was called "the land of boulders and bears." With an area of 41.35 square miles, the Bolton area boasts at least 20 mountains of more than 2,000 feet and several more of lower elevation.
