Hinesburg (pop. 4024) is located in Chittenden County on Highway 116 about 15 miles southeast of Burlington and about 10 east of Lake Champlain. The village is surrounded by open, green farmland along the small LaPlatte River. Hinesburg was settled mostly by Rhode Islanders before the Revolutionary War. It was chartered on June 24, 1762, deserted and resettled in 1784. Hineburg's history is rooted in farming and early water-powered manufacturing. Lake Iroquois in the nearby hills features a public beach and boat access, and several parks and recreation facilities offer activities year-round.
