Windsor is located in Windsor County, 10 miles north of Claremont along Interstate 91 on the banks of the Connecticut River, near Ascutney State Park. It is called the birthplace of Vermont, where the state constitution was accepted in 1777. Vermont's constitution was unique in many ways: it was the first to prohibit slavery, the first to establish a system of public schools, and the first to establish a voting rights. The building where the signing of the consitution took place is known as The Old Constitution House State Historic Site, which is open to the public for tours. This 18th century former tavern is located on Main Street at the northern end of the village of Windsor.
