Search Winooski Vermont

Winooski (pop. 6,649) is in Chittenden County on the shore of Lake Champlain and the Winooski River, slightly northeast of Burlington, Vermont's largest city.

The name comes from the Native Abenaki tongue for "wild onions," once prolific along the river. A prehistoric campground dating to 5,000 years ago exists in Winooski. In the early 1770s, one Ira Allen "led a people through a wilderness of 70 miles" to build a substantial blockhouse on the river, which served as a fort, general store and office for the land-speculating Onion River Company. Historically, a large number of French Canadians flocked to the area. Today, there is still a large French-speaking population, so that the local cable carries two French stations out of Montreal, Canada.

Winooski is part of the Burlington, Vermont metro area.
