Chief Joseph Dam is the second largest hydropower producing dam in the United States--second only to Grand Coulee Dam, and is operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Alone it produces enough power to supply the whole Seattle metropolitan area. The dam, named after the leader of the Nez Perce Indians, was completed in 1958. The reservoir behind the dam is called Rufus Woods Lake. There is a visitor center at the dam.
