The headwaters of the Cowlitz River are on the south slope of Mount Rainier. The river flows southwest through Packwood and Randle, at which point it turns away from Highway 12. Two dams, Mayfield and Mossyrock, create reservoirs on the river. Below the dams, it flows past Toledo, Castle Rock, and between Kelso and Longview before joining the Columbia River.
