Cape Disappointment State Park

Search Ilwaco Washington
Cape Disappointment State Park (formerly Fort Canby State Park) is a 1,882-acre camping park on the Long Beach Peninsula, fronted by the Pacific Ocean. The park offers two miles of ocean beach, two lighthouses, an interpretive center and hiking trails.

First sighted by the Spaniard Bruno Heceta in 1775, Cape Disappointment is located at the mouth of the Columbia River. Its name reflects the difficulty that early explorers had in trying to locate the river's mouth.

Cape Disappointment Lighthouse, completed in 1856, still stands guard over the mouth of the Columbia River, which had become known as "The Graveyard of the Pacific". A second lighthouse, the North Head Lighthouse, stands just beside the ocean near the northwest corner of the state park. Another feature of the park is the Confluence Project, a permanent art installation by Maya Lin.
