The Stillaguamish River flows through relatively unpopulated areas. The two forks rise in the Washington's Cascade Mountains and join together near Arlington before flowing into Puget Sound at Port Susan. Among the major rivers of the eastern side of Puget Sound, the Stillaguamish is south of the Skagit River and north of the Snohomish River.
