Designed in an austere German style known as Zopfstil, the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist was built December 5, 1847 and in 1893 the tower was constructed. After a fire partially destroyed the Cathedral in 1935, it was rebuilt and the east end of the building was expanded. After a complete restoration, the Cathedral was rededicated on February 9, 2002. There continues to be work done on the establishment of a gated courtyard, prayer garden and atrium in the commons to the north of the Cathedral. Architects and artists have created many fine etchings in a tribute to the acclaimed the Cathedral and its magnificent tower. It is noted as one of the most admired pieces of architecture in Milwaukee. Designated as a Milwaukee landmark, the Cathedral is listed in the National Register of Historical Places.
