Aurora is in the Preston County (Northern Region) area where West Virginia's state tree, the sugar maple, is plentiful.
American Indians once collected the sap from the sugar maple which runs in early spring, in wooden troughs, and heated it with hot stones. The sap, now gathered using metal buckets or networks of plastic tubing, lead into large tanks, and is then processed in modern evaporating plants.
Cathedral State Park, comprises 132 acres that offer 5 miles of walking trails, a nature area and picnic facilities. An eastern hemlock tree that is more than 500 years old and 121 feet tall stands as a monument in the park.
