French Creek is in Upshur County (Central Region).
The city was first settled in 1808 by a party from Massachusetts. The name came from a local legend about three Frenchmen who prospected for gold in the area in 1725.
The WV State Wildlife Center and the Stonecool Lake WMA are wonderful places to visit to view wildlife and nature of the area. The camping around the area is wonderful due to the amount of camping facilities close to the city.
The Kanawha River and the Buckhannon River are near the city providing numerous fishing and boating opportunities for residents and visitors. Many local shops in the area offer merchandise for water activities.
