Although hundreds of thousands of visitors see the Jackson Hole each year, not many can claim to know much about the Gros Ventre Wilderness. It is extremely rugged outback, complete with badlands and narrow chasms. There are over 20 peaks over 10,000 ft. It comprises a full 287,000 acres. The mountains in the area are said to be fairly young. The wilderness area itself is young as well, for Wyoming didn't include it in the Wyoming Wilderness Act until 1984. The area lies directly east of Jackson, the most western point only half of a mile from the Jackson city limits. Access roads include Hwy 191/26/89 and Hwy 191/189. The main attraction to Gros Ventre would most likely be its solitary, extreme 200 miles of trails. The trails feature a large variety of vegetation, as well as many streams. Snows do not usually melt from high country until July. Be cautious of surplus stream runoff that could make some trails unsafe. For more information, contact the Bridger-Teton National Forest.
