The Yukon River is the fourth largest waterway in North America, and the great river in Alaska and the Yukon. Although it begins in Canada, most of its course is in Alaska. The total length is almost 2000 miles. The Yukon drains more than 330,000 square miles, more than half of which is in Alaska. It begins in a series of small lakes in the extreme northwest corner of British Columbia. From this oint, it flows northwest and joins the Pelly River at Fort Selkirk. Later it passes Dawson and flows past the U.S./Canadian border near Eagle, Alaska.
